ATLANTA -- Rock 'n' roll meets zombie gore when Dracula: The Rock Opera takes the stage at 7 Stages Theatre.

The musical extravaganza is the brainchild of composer Rob Thompson and Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse creator Shane Morton. It remains faithful to Bram Stoker's 1897 novel.

"While writing, I had a copy of Dracula beside me, and I would constantly refer to the parts I was writing about," Thompson said. "I pulled everything out of the book and did not add anything new, like a love story."

The music itself has a gritty, underground feel, perfect for a Little 5 Points audience. 7 Stages describes it as "inspired by groups like Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple, with a splash of Jesus Christ Superstar for that theatrical flare."

All this will be coupled with Morton's gruesome airbrushed makeup. Morton, who some have called the Rob Zombie of Atlanta, says he grew up loving classic horror films and brings his passion to this production.

"I've been obsessed with Dracula since I was a child to such an extreme that I traveled as an adult to Transylvania to research Vlad the Impaler," he said.

Dracula: The Rock Opera will open 7 Stages' 34th season. The production runs from Sept. 13 to Oct. 14. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday; tickets for all showings are $30.
