Citizens’ University to kick off for 11th year

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County’s Citizens’ University begins April 2 for the 11th consecutive year.

The 12-week intensive training program provides citizens with a close-up view of how their local government works. Participants can gain a better understanding of County government, the available services and the role of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner Joan Garner, District 4, has taken the lead in continuing Citizens’ University, which is an initiative originally led by former Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards.

Citizens’ University students learn how laws are proposed, passed and amended and they personally interact with key management personnel. Participants are urged to take what they learn back to their communities to strengthen ties between communities and their government and encourage more collaboration to enhance the quality of life in Fulton County.

The class schedule includes reviews of departments such as Finance/Tax Assessor, Fire, Police/Code Enforcement, Registration and Elections, the Justice System, Tax Commissioner, Health Services, Aging and Youth, Housing and Community Development and other County operations. Class participants are able to interact with departmental managers and ask questions about how services are provided.

The registration fee is $40, which helps to defray the cost of course materials, a graduation ceremony, a diploma and a class shirt. Class size is limited to 30 citizens, which ensures beneficial one-on-one experiences.

All classes begin at 6 p.m. The first class date is Thursday, April 2, and the final class is scheduled on Thursday, June 11, with a graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 18. The deadline for class registration is Wednesday, March 18.
